Try Outranking FreeFrase.io
AI-powered SEO content optimization and brief generation
Starting at $15/mo
Try Frase FreeOutranking and Frase both cost under $20/mo and both help you create SEO content. That’s where the similarity ends.
Frase ($15/mo) is a specialist. It does content research and brief generation better than any tool we’ve tested — period. SERP analysis, People Also Ask data, topic scoring, and structured briefs in under two minutes. It has an AI writer and content scoring built in, but the research layer is the reason you buy Frase.
Outranking ($19/mo) is a generalist. It bundles content briefs, AI writing, optimization scoring, automatic internal linking, and SERP tracking into a single workflow. No individual feature is best-in-class, but you never leave the platform — from keyword to published article, everything happens in one place.
The question is whether you want the best tool for the most important step, or one tool that handles every step. We tested both to find out.
How We Tested
We ran both tools through three content workflows over several weeks:
- Brief generation: Same keyword (“best standing desks for home offices,” KD ~25) — compared depth, structure, and actionability of the briefs
- Full article workflow: Research, outline, write, and optimize a complete article in each tool — compared time-to-publish and output quality
- Content scoring: Pasted the same draft into both tools and compared optimization recommendations
We measured: research depth, workflow speed, optimization quality, and overall value per dollar.
Frase: The Research Specialist
Frase starts with intelligence. Enter a keyword and in under 60 seconds you get a complete picture of what Google rewards for that query — competitor headings, topic gaps, People Also Ask questions, word count targets, and a structured content brief ready to hand to a writer.
Where Frase Excels
Brief generation is genuinely best-in-class. For our standing desk keyword, Frase pulled the top 20 search results, extracted 14 distinct subtopics, surfaced 23 related questions from PAA data, and organized everything into a structured outline — in about 90 seconds. We’ve tested every content tool on the market, and nothing produces briefs this fast or this thorough.
Question research surfaces what your audience actually asks. Frase pulls People Also Ask data and related questions directly into your brief. Every question is a potential subheading, FAQ entry, or content angle. For our test keyword, it found questions about ergonomic height ranges, cable management solutions, and mat recommendations that we wouldn’t have thought to include without the research.
Content scoring gives clear targets. After writing, Frase scores your draft against what’s ranking. Our first draft scored 72/100 with specific suggestions — add a comparison table, cover weight capacity, include a section on height adjustment mechanisms. After revisions, we hit 89/100. The feedback is actionable, not vague.
$15/mo is hard to argue with. Frase is $4/mo cheaper than Outranking despite producing better briefs. The Solo plan includes 10 document credits per month — enough for most solo creators and small teams.
Where Frase Falls Short
It doesn’t track your rankings. After publishing, Frase has no way to monitor how your content performs in search. You need a separate rank tracker ($10-20/mo) to close that feedback loop.
No automatic internal linking. As your content library grows, manually identifying internal link opportunities across 50+ articles becomes a real time sink. Frase doesn’t help here.
The workflow has gaps. Frase excels at research and optimization but doesn’t connect those stages into a unified workflow. You research in Frase, write elsewhere (or use Frase’s mid-tier AI writer), then return to Frase for scoring. It works, but it’s not seamless.
AI writing quality is mid-tier. Frase’s AI writer produces functional drafts that need editing. If you need polished first drafts, tools like Koala AI at $9/mo produce noticeably better raw output.

Outranking: The All-in-One Workflow
Outranking starts with efficiency. The pitch is simple: why pay for three tools when one handles briefs, writing, optimization, internal linking, and rank tracking for $19/mo? We tested whether that consolidated workflow actually saves time or just spreads quality too thin.
Where Outranking Excels
The end-to-end workflow eliminates context-switching. From keyword research through publishing, you never leave the platform. We timed our full article workflow in both tools. In Frase, the research-write-optimize cycle across multiple tabs took about 75 minutes. In Outranking, the same workflow in one environment took about 55 minutes. That 20-minute difference compounds across dozens of articles.
Automatic internal linking is a feature nobody else offers at this price. As you write, Outranking suggests internal links to your other published content — identifying anchor text opportunities and relevant target URLs. About 70% of suggestions were useful in our testing. Manually building internal links takes 5-10 minutes per article; Outranking cuts that to under a minute. For sites with 50+ pages, this alone is worth serious consideration. Koala AI offers something similar (KoalaLinks) but locks it behind the $49/mo Professional plan.
Built-in SERP tracking closes the feedback loop. After publishing, you can monitor keyword rankings directly in Outranking — no separate subscription required. The tracking is basic compared to dedicated tools, but it covers daily position updates and trend data. Every other content tool we’ve reviewed either lacks this or charges extra.
Content scoring is competitive. Outranking’s optimization scoring came within a few points of Frase’s scoring on the same drafts. It correctly identified missing subtopics, flagged over-used terms, and provided actionable suggestions. Not quite as granular as Surfer SEO’s NLP analysis, but for 90% of content workflows, the difference is marginal.
The value math works. A comparable multi-tool stack — Frase ($15/mo) + Koala AI ($9/mo) + a basic rank tracker ($15/mo) — costs $39/mo minimum. Outranking bundles equivalent functionality for $19/mo. You save ~$20/mo and manage one login instead of three.
Where Outranking Falls Short
Briefs don’t match Frase. Outranking’s brief generation is adequate — it pulls competitor headings and topics — but it lacks Frase’s depth. No People Also Ask integration, fewer source citations, less granular topic scoring. If briefs are your primary deliverable (especially for client work), Frase produces output you can hand over confidently. Outranking’s briefs need supplementing.
No single feature is the best available. This is the core trade-off. The briefs are 70-80% of Frase’s quality. The scoring is 85% of Surfer’s depth. The AI writing is below Koala AI’s polish. If any one capability is your top priority, the specialist wins.
Smaller community, fewer resources. Frase and Surfer have extensive tutorial libraries, YouTube channels, and active user communities. Outranking’s community is growing but smaller — you’ll find fewer third-party guides and troubleshooting resources.
The UI is functional, not polished. Frase has invested in interface design — clean layouts, smooth interactions, clear visual hierarchy. Outranking’s interface works but feels more utilitarian. For a $19/mo tool this is forgivable, but the gap is noticeable.

The Real Question: Depth or Breadth?
Choose Frase If:
Content research is your competitive advantage. If you’re an SEO professional or content strategist whose work depends on understanding what Google rewards for a keyword, Frase’s research layer is unmatched at any price. The brief generation alone justifies the subscription.
You produce client-facing deliverables. Agencies need briefs they can hand to writers or present to clients. Frase’s structured output — competitor analysis, question data, topic gaps, content scoring — is professional-grade. Outranking’s briefs are fine for internal use but less polished as client deliverables.
You already have a writing tool. If you use Koala AI for drafts or have human writers, you don’t need Outranking’s built-in writer. Frase covers research and scoring — the two stages where data matters most — and you fill in writing with whatever tool you prefer.
Budget is the top priority. Frase is $4/mo cheaper. If you’re comparing these two tools on pure cost, Frase wins while delivering better research. The only scenario where Outranking is cheaper is when you’d otherwise need to add a rank tracker and internal linking tool on top of Frase.
Choose Outranking If:
You want one tool, one workflow. If managing multiple subscriptions and switching between platforms creates friction in your process, Outranking eliminates that entirely. Research, write, optimize, link, track — one login, one monthly bill. The 20-minute time savings per article compounds.
Internal linking is a priority. If you publish frequently and your content library is growing past 30-40 articles, automated internal linking suggestions become a genuine productivity gain. No other tool under $50/mo offers this.
You need rank tracking without another subscription. If you’re currently paying $10-20/mo for a standalone rank tracker, switching to Outranking could actually save money while adding content optimization features you didn’t have before.
You’re a solopreneur handling everything. If you’re the researcher, writer, optimizer, and publisher — no team, no separate writers — Outranking’s integrated workflow matches that reality better than a specialist tool that only covers one stage.
Our Recommendation
Frase wins for most content creators. The research depth is genuinely better, the briefs save more time, the price is lower, and content scoring is comparable. If your workflow has any separation between research and writing — even if that’s just “I research, then I write” — Frase gives you better intelligence at every decision point.
Outranking wins for solopreneurs who value simplicity. If you publish 5-10 articles per month, handle every stage yourself, and want to stop juggling tools, Outranking’s $19/mo all-in-one workflow is the smarter buy. The internal linking and SERP tracking features add value that Frase simply doesn’t offer.
